The journey towards an accessible Gipsy Hill Station

The journey towards an accessible Gipsy Hill Station began a few years ago with the dedicated efforts of local community group Friends of Gipsy Hill. Over time, the campaign gained traction as more residents and advocates joined the cause. Among them was journalism student Eddie Kämpgen, who experienced firsthand the challenges posed by Platform 2's inaccessibility. 

Friends of Gipsy Hill applied for step-free access to Platform 2 through the Department of Transport several years ago, as mentioned by Andy Scholes: "We have applied for step free access to platform 2 to the Department of Transport a couple of years ago. It was never affordable due to the signalling equipment. We are unsure whether the new equipment is compatible with a lift but have asked GTR." 

Kämpgen's involvement added a fresh perspective and voice to the campaign. With the growing support of local residents and leaders like Labour Party Councillor Rebecca Spencer, the movement continued to gain momentum. 

Despite the challenges faced in the past, the campaign has persisted. Friends of Gipsy Hill and supporters like Kampgen are determined to work with railway operators to assess the feasibility of installing a lift at Platform 2. As Andy Scholes said, "We want to make sure it is achievable before we make another formal application. We will apply in due course once we know." 

 Patricia Johnson said: “...Some 10 or more years ago the decision makers said they would install a lift. This clearly did not happen...did the money allocated for the lift disappear?
