The struggle of Gipsy Hill commuters 

In the bustling London neighbourhood of Gipsy Hill, home to nearly 24,000 residents across Lambeth and Southwark boroughs, a united voice rises above the crowd. Driven by the shared experiences of struggle at their local train station, the community rallies behind the Step-Free, Step Forward Gipsy Hill campaign. 

With around 1.5 million passengers, including residents and visitors, passing through Gipsy Hill Station every year, it is clear the station serves as a lifeline for the area. As the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) reports, about 4,109 people use this station each day, making accessibility improvements more crucial than ever. 

London Metropolitan University journalism student and proud father Edimar Kämpgen experienced these challenges firsthand, juggling his studies and family responsibilities while navigating the station's inaccessible features. His personal struggle inspired him to create the Step-Free, Step Forward Gipsy Hill campaign, empowering others facing similar difficulties. 

Gipsy Hill Station's Platform 2 has been at the centre of this community's concern for years. Local Labour Party Councillor Rebecca Spencer endorses the campaign and acknowledges the issue and the urgent need for upgrades. "This is an issue we are very aware of... and we have been campaigning for these improvements for a very long time." 

Station staff member Charles Dickson also witnesses the daily struggle faced by commuters, often stepping in to assist families and those with mobility challenges. "Children or people who are having the pushchair, they have to be helped by me or by even some of the customers," said Dickson. 

Tina Jenner, a station commuter, shares her frustrations on the campaign website, "Carrying any luggage or travelling with my young grandchildren is very difficult. The advice currently is to travel on to Crystal Palace, change trains and come back to Gipsy Hill on Platform 1." This inconvenience only highlights the urgency of change for all Gipsy Hill Station users.
