In March 2023, workers started building a new road layout on ‘Georgia Street’ in Charlton Place, Islington, aiming to ease traffic congestion for cars and cyclists. However, the changes have sparked mixed reactions from the community, impacting local businesses and residents alike.

The goal of the initiative was to create a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment by implementing measures to slow down traffic. Unfortunately, these alterations have negatively affected area businesses, with some experiencing a significant 40% drop in sales back in March.

The road realignment has also led to frequent traffic jams caused by delivery drivers.

Tashko, the 33-year-old owner of "Man Cave" barber shop, expressed his concerns, saying, "Nothing has changed for me, but I often see delivery drivers blocking traffic due to the new road layout. Then it can be a problem." His sentiment echoes the worries of other anonymous local businesses, who face disruptions in their daily operations because of the road changes.

In contrast, Claudia Knaap, a 53-year-old local resident and freelance house viewer, welcomes the new layout. "I love [the] curves. So, I do like it.” “As a keen cyclist, I believe people should avoid driving around here," said her.

Knaap strongly advocates for alternative transportation, promoting a more walkable and bike-friendly community. "I think people have bone idle and I am all for walking and biking and not part case.”

Knaap, also criticized the previous parking situation, saying, "Who seriously drives 10 minutes to try to park there to go to a shop? ‘It's more hassle than it's worth.’" For some locals, the road alterations have added inconvenience to an area that was already notorious for its limited parking options.

Despite differing opinions, the local council stands by its decision to create a safer and greener urban space. The new road design, though met with challenges, aligns with the broader goal of promoting eco-friendly and active modes of transportation, creating a ‘safer’ environment for residents.

Standing in the area is visible that not much changed, rather than the design, as the zebra crossing was not implemented, and just a narrowing including kerbs happened on the street. Only time will tell how the community will adapt to the changes and whether the road layout will create a more sustainable and vibrant neighbourhood.
